Vermont's rivers and lakes are beautiful places to swim and explore, but they come with real risks and responsibilities. Help protect yourself, others, and the environment by following a few simple guidelines.
Stay Safe
- Never swim or jump alone.
- Choose safe locations and follow posted signs and closures.
- Check water depth and watch for rocks, logs, currents, and other hazards.
- Enter the water feet-first unless the depth and bottom are known.
- Know your limits and avoid peer pressure.
- Wear shoes with good traction on wet rocks.
- Keep a close watch on children.
- Avoid swimming or jumping during or after heavy rain.
- Never swim or jump under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Protect the Water & Environment
- Pack out all trash and leave the area cleaner than you found it.
- Do not bring glass near water.
- Avoid soap, shampoo, and other chemicals in natural water.
- Apply sunscreen and bug spray well before entering the water.
- Stay on established paths and avoid disturbing wildlife or shoreline plants.
- Use bathrooms when available and keep waste far from water sources.
- Pick up pet waste and keep dogs under control.
Respect Others
- Share swimming and jumping areas responsibly.
- Keep noise levels reasonable.
- Follow local rules and closures to help protect these places for everyone.
