Backcountry Skiing

Whether it be skinning in the mountains or fishscale skiing along the valley floor, backcountry skiing is a low-impact, healthy, and downright fun way to explore the Mad River Valley in winter conditions.

The Mad River Valley Backcountry Coalition

The Mad River Valley Backcountry Coalition (MRVBC) is the local resource for all things backcountry skiing! MRVBC promotes human-powered backcountry winter recreation, environmental awareness, responsible trail use, and backcountry safety in and around the Mad River Valley. Please reach out to MRVBC with any questions or comments.

Be Backcountry Smart!

To responsibly enjoy all the Valley has to offer when covered with snow, please remember the following points:

  • Follow the Vermont Backcountry Ethic.
  • Be safe and prepared.
  • Know how to use your gear and test it before you go: MRVBC puts on a "Backcountry Primer" every fall to make sure you, and your gear, are ready to go for the winter.
  • Have first aid skills, and keep them fresh: MRVBC hosts an annual Wilderness First Course, just in case your adventure veers from the expected skin track.
  • Carry a first aid and gear repair kit.
  • Be avalanche aware: If you are going to ski in avalanche terrain, make sure you are equipped and prepared.

Backcountry Skiing in the Mad River Valley

The Mad River Valley offers a variety of backcountry skiing opportunities.

  • The Catamount Trail: Sections 18 and 19 of the Catamount Trail offer scenic touring in the Valley between Lincoln Gap and Appalachian Gap. Learn more here.
  • Public Lands: The Valley's public lands, including Green Mountain National Forest, Camel's Hump State Park, and our municipal lands, offer excellent winter explorations. Be respectful of public lands and their rules. There is no room for unauthorized cutting on public lands.
  • Access and Parking: Be prepared for winter conditions. Roads and parking lots may be snowy, icy or soft depending on conditions. Refer to local recreation maps and guides for trailhead and trail locations. Parking space is often limited in winter months. Always be mindful of limited space and other cars, and have a backup plan in case the parking lot is full.
  • Uphill skiing at Valley ski resorts: The Valley is home to world class resort skiing at Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. If you are donning skins at a resort, always know and follow the rules!
  • Nordic skiing: Nordic skiing is another great way to get out and glide on snow! The Valley is home to both Ole's Cross Country Ski and Snowshoes Center and Blueberry Lake Cross Country Ski Center. Be sure to check them out and support them as well.
